On Flinders Street in winter's breath,
Where light is low and still as death,
A family walked through morning's grey,
Their shapes cast long in soft decay.
One teenage boy stepped just ahead,
His gaze afar, thoughts loosely spread.
Behind, the father pushed the pram,
Its wheels in rhythm, slow and calm.
A younger child lay nestled deep,
Half-dreaming in a winter sleep.
The city's stir passed all around,
Yet peace within that pram was found.
The mother walked with silent grace,
Dark glasses veiled her watching face.
She turned to me—no smile, no frown,
Just knowing as she looked me down.
No need for words, no need for sound,
The tramline sang, the world spun round.
And in that frame of black and white,
They carried love through morning light.

Upon Flinders Street they tread with cheer,
Two youthful souls in garb austere.
In shirts and shorts, with steps so fleet,
They journey forth through bustling street.
The city hums, the trams roll by,
The footie’s call is drawing nigh.
With laughter light and spirits flame,
They march together toward the game.

Along Flinders Street the footsteps beat,
A chap moves steady through the heat.
Dark glasses hide his guarded gaze,
A cap pulled low in city haze.
Upon his chest, in black and white,
The Collingwood crest declares its might.
He walks with pride, both firm and free,
A living note in Melbourne’s symphony.

In front of Flinders Station, the best place to check out the crowd.

Beneath the stone of Flinders Street,
An old man moves on steady feet,
A paper map held firm, yet frail,
As if to chart a vanished trail.
Beside him walks a boy of youth,
His grin bright, his step uncouth,
A sun-glass crown upon his hair,
A careless halo, light as air.
Two figures bound by time’s design,
One tracing roads, one yet to find,
Together in the city’s hum
The past and future walk as one.

Before Flinders’ grand and storied face,
The crowd assembles, throngs in place.
A tide of footsteps, swift and slow,
Through city’s heart they ebb and flow.
Beneath the clock, where meetings start,
The station hums, the city’s heart.
In Melbourne’s pulse, both near and far,
The people gather, as they are.

He is a well-known figure on the streets of Melbourne, often singing loudly and embracing passersby with his sweat-soaked jumper. He also experiences vivid hallucinations, which he insists others believe.
Another man is also notable, fond of holding a large carrot toy aloft near the entrance of Flinders Street Station.
I ought to publish a series showcasing the renowned characters of the city streets.

By Jackson’s wall on Flinders wide,
Where trams do groan and footsteps glide,
A lady walks in coat of grace,
With shaded eyes and steadfast face.
Her trench is tied in noble thread,
Like whispers stitched from times long dead,
Its folds command the morning air,
As though she strolled from Baudelaire.
The city hums, a restless tide,
Where strangers pass and thoughts collide;
Yet still she moves, serene, apart,
A quiet world around her heart.
The crowd flows on in clashing stream,
Each caught within their private dream,
While she, composed in poise and form,
Stands like a calm within the storm.
And over her frame the light does play,
As clouds retreat from break of day;
In monochrome, she seems to be
A ghost of grace and memory.

He strides in suit with purpose bold,
A voice like brass in morning cold;
His words fly fast, a streaming train,
Across the street, through wind and rain.
In Flinders' shadow, trams glide past,
The crossing blinks, the moment lasts;
An Aussie leans, with coffee slow,
Unbothered by the urgent show.
A tradesman laughs, a banker sips,
As sunlight curls on city lips;
The rush of one, the calm of rest—
Each walking in the way they’re dressed.
So Melbourne hums, both loud and still,
A patchwork bound by common will.
